The harsh reality faced by accountants in the age of AI

This is not another 'AI is coming' article. Extraction, classification and drafting already work. The honest question is what an accountant is for, once they work everywhere.

An accountant standing between a fading abacus of light and a rising AI constellation

The profession has survived every previous technology wave by moving up the value chain: calculators did not end accounting, spreadsheets did not end it, cloud software did not end it. Each time, the mechanical layer sank and the judgement layer rose. AI is the same wave — but it is the largest one, and it reaches further up the chain than anything before it.

The harsh part, stated plainly

  • Data entry, extraction and first-pass classification are gone as billable work. Not declining — gone.
  • A competent owner with AI-assisted software can now keep books that satisfy a lender or a tax authority without a bookkeeper.
  • Clients will compare your turnaround time against software that closes in days, and your fee against a subscription.
  • Junior roles — the profession's training pipeline — are exactly the roles automation absorbs first.

What does not get automated

Judgement under ambiguity: whether a payment is capital or revenue, whether revenue is earned, whether a going-concern note is needed. Accountability: someone who signs, who is regulated, who can be asked 'did you check?' and lose something if the answer is no. And trust: the relationship in which a business owner hears unwelcome news from a person rather than a dashboard.

AI removes the work nobody trained for anyway. Nobody spent five years qualifying because they loved retyping invoices.

The repositioning playbook

Accountants who thrive will run on the same rails their clients use — reviewing AI-drafted books instead of building them, supervising controls instead of reconstructing them, and selling the interpretation of statements rather than the production of them. Ten clients become fifty, not through longer hours but through a different division of labour. The harsh reality is real. So is the opportunity it clears space for — but only for those who move before the market prices it in.

Put this into practice

theGL.app reads your documents, drafts balanced double-entry journals for you to confirm, and keeps statements, notes and controls up to date as you go.
